چکیده

We present NOT optical observations of a clump (l = 127. • 9435 , b = +1. • 8298), embedded in an extended, irregularly shaped, diffuse optical nebula. This condensation shows an emission-line spectrum typical of classic H ii regions. Although its location on the sky coincides with a nearby extended photoionized region recently identified by Cichowolski et al. (2003) in radio data from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS), the systemic velocity of this ≈ 1 ′-sized H ii region, VLSR = −71±12 km s −1 , poses it far out in the Galaxy, beyond the Perseus arm. The location of this region in the Galaxy is supported by H i structures visible at comparable radial velocity on CGPS data. We argue that this H ii region might belong to an outer Galactic arm. The emission line ratios of the surrounding extended nebula, whose radial velocity is consistent with that of the small H ii region, are typical of photoionized gas in the low density limit. Smaller clumps of comparable surface brightness are visible within the optical boundaries of the extended, faint nebula. After comparison of the optical data with far infrared and radio observations, we conclude that this nebula is an H ii region, ∼ 70 pc in size, probably photoionized by an association of OB stars and surrounded by a ring of neutral hydrogen.

The Distance and Metallicity of the Newly Discovered, Nearby Irregular Galaxy HIZSS3

HIZSS3 is an H I source in the Zone of Avoidance. Its radio characteristics are consistent with it being a previously unknown nearby (∼ 1.8 Mpc) low-mass dwarf irregular (dIm) galaxy. Optical observations have shown that it contains a modest H II region but failed to reveal a resolved stellar population. New spectroscopic observations of the H II region obtained at the MMT Observatory are prese...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding  the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and  the distribution of the baryons is gal...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
